Redwood Voice Youth Media
Redwood Voice Youth Media began in 2010 as part of the Building Healthy Communities Initiative, funded by the California Endowment. The goal of RV is to train youth in Media Arts, and give a platform to youth voice. In 2019, KFUG Community Radio became the fiscal non-profit sponsor of Redwood Voice, and Broadcast Journalism was added to the repertoire.
Since then, thanks to the continued support of the California Endowment, as well as a plethora of local underwriters and other funding agencies, RV has expanded greatly, hiring several local youth and teaching them how to be journalists on the radio. Today, Redwood Voice produces Redwood Voice Community News for broadcast on KFUG Community Radio, the ONLY hourlong newscast produced in Del Norte County. RV Community News is also broadcast on KZZH-LP in Eureka and KCIW-LP in Brookings, Oregon.
In 2024, KFUG Community Radio hired journalist Jessica Cejnar-Andrews to be Senior Writer/Supervising Editor for Redwood Voice. With 16 years as a journalist, many of them as the ONLY print journalist covering Del Norte County, the expertise she brings to Redwood Voice is immeasurable. Under Jessica’s guidance and tutelage, local youth learn how to be community journalists in an often challenging rural setting.
Today, Redwood Voice has grown into a regional, homegrown news source, writing articles and producing broadcasts, as well as video content for the Redwood Voice YouTube Channel, that inform and engage. Visit the Redwood Voice website, YouTube Channel, Like and Subscribe on all the Socials, and LISTEN to Redwood Voice Community News every weekday on KFUG-LP!
